Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Role Hassles Index – RHI was developed by Dov Zohar (1997). It is designed to measure Role Hassles (Conflict, Ambiguity, Overload). The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Hassles Conflict, Hassles Overload, Hassles Ambiguity.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Hassles Conflict | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 | 8 |
| Hassles Overload | 9,10,11,12,13,14,15 | 7 |
| Hassles Ambiguity | 16,17,18,19,20 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Did not occur, 1 = Slightly disruptive, 2 = Quite disruptive, 3 = Very disruptive.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Disruption: 0 – 20
- Moderate Disruption: 21 – 40
- High Disruption: 41 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Composite alpha of .88 (Conflict: .80, Overload: .82, Ambiguity: .71).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
