Scale Overview
The Revised Sociosexual Orientation Inventory – SOI-R was developed by Lars Penke & Lars B. Asendorpf (2008). It is designed to measure Sociosexual Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

This instrument consists of 9 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Behavior, Attitude, Desire.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 0 partners / Strongly disagree / Never, 2 = 1 partner / Very seldom, 3 = 2 partners / About once every 2-3 months, 4 = 3 partners / About once a month, 5 = 4 partners / About once every 2 weeks, 6 = 5-6 partners / About once a week, 7 = 7-9 partners / Several times per week, 8 = 10-19 partners / Strongly agree / Nearly every day, 9 = 20 or more partners / At least once a day.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 9 to 81. Interpretation guidelines:
- Restricted Sociosexual Orientation: 9 – 35
- Moderate Sociosexual Orientation: 36 – 54
- Unrestricted Sociosexual Orientation: 55 – 81
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.83.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
