Scale Overview
The Revised Sociosexual Orientation Inventory – SOI-R was developed by Lars Penke & Jens B. Asendorpf (2008). It is designed to measure Sociosexual Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 0 partners / 1 (Strongly disagree) / Never, 2 = 1 partner / 2 / Very seldom, 3 = 2 partners / 3 / About once every 2 or 3 months, 4 = 3 partners / 4 / About once a month, 5 = 4 partners / 5 / About once every two weeks, 6 = 5-6 partners / 6 / About once a week, 7 = 7-9 partners / 7 / Several times per week, 8 = 10-19 partners / 8 (Strongly agree) / Nearly every day, 9 = 20 or more partners / 9 / At least once a day.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 9. Interpretation guidelines:
- Restricted sociosexual orientation: 1 – 4
- Unrestricted sociosexual orientation: 5 – 9
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.83 – 0.87.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
