Scale Overview
The Revised Sociosexual Orientation Inventory – SOI-R was developed by Lars Penke & Jens B. Asendorpf (2008). It is designed to measure Sociosexual Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

This instrument consists of 9 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Behavior, Attitude, Desire.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 0 partners / Strongly disagree / Never, 2 = 1 partner / Moderately disagree / Very seldom, 3 = 2 partners / Slightly disagree / About once every 2-3 months, 4 = 3 partners / Slightly agree / About once a month, 5 = 4 partners / Moderately agree / About once every 2 weeks, 6 = 5-6 partners / Strongly agree / About once a week, 7 = 7-9 partners / Several times per week, 8 = 10-19 partners / Nearly every day, 9 = 20 or more partners / At least once a day.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 9. Interpretation guidelines:
- Restricted sociosexual orientation (preference for commitment and emotional closeness before sex): 1 – 4
- Unrestricted sociosexual orientation (comfortable with casual sex without commitment): 5 – 9
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha values range from 0.83 to 0.87 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
