Religious Variables Scales (RVS)
A multidimensional self-report instrument designed to measure ten distinct dimensions of religious belief, practice, and orientation.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Religious Variables Scales (RVS) was developed by Morton B. King and Richard A. Hunt (1972). It is designed to measure Multidimensional Religiosity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 59 items organized into 10 factors/subscales: Creedal Assent, Devotionalism, Church Attendance, Organizational Activity, Financial Support, Religious Knowledge, Growth and Striving, Extrinsic, Behavior, Cognition.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Creedal Assent | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 | 7 |
| Devotionalism | 8,9,10,11,12 | 5 |
| Church Attendance | 13,14,15 | 3 |
| Organizational Activity | 16,17,18,19,20,21 | 6 |
| Financial Support | 22,23,24,25,26 | 5 |
| Religious Knowledge | 27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34 | 8 |
| Growth and Striving | 35,36,37,38,39,40 | 6 |
| Extrinsic | 41,42,43,44,45,46,47 | 7 |
| Behavior | 48,49,50,51,52,53,54 | 7 |
| Cognition | 55,56,57,58,59 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree / Seldom or Never, 2 = Disagree / Occasionally, 3 = Agree / Fairly Regularly, 4 = Strongly Agree / Regularly.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from .734 to .852 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
