Scale Overview
The Religious Values Scale – RVS was developed by Everett L. Worthington Jr. (1988). It is designed to measure Religious Values. The scale is intended for use with Adults / Psychotherapy clients.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 62 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Religious Commitment, Authority of Sacred Writings, Preference for Counselor/Others (Scripture), Identification with Religious Group, Authority of Religious Leaders, Preference for Counselor/Others (Authority).

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all true of me, 2 = Somewhat true of me, 3 = Moderately true of me, 4 = Mostly true of me, 5 = Totally true of me.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 62 to 310. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Religious Values Commitment: 62 – 144
- Moderate Religious Values Commitment: 145 – 227
- High Religious Values Commitment: 228 – 310
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alphas range from .47 to .99 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
