Scale Overview
The Religious Status Inventory (RSI) was developed by H. Newton Malony (1985). It is designed to measure Christian Religious Maturity. The scale is intended for use with Christian adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 144 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not true of me, 2 = Slightly true of me, 3 = Moderately true of me, 4 = Mostly true of me, 5 = True of me.
The scale includes 45 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 144 to 720. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Religious Maturity: 144 – 384
- Moderate Religious Maturity: 385 – 528
- High Religious Maturity: 529 – 720
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients ranging from .54 to .98 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
