Scale Overview
The Religious Identification Scale – RI was developed by J. H. Panton (1979). It is designed to measure Religious Identification. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous True/False format.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 12. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low religious identification (little or no participation in religious worship, lack of identification with religious principles, or rejection of religion): 0 – 6
- High religious identification (belief in and identification with a religious faith, and individual or collective participation in worship): 7 – 12
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
