Scale Overview
The Religious Experience Questionnaire – REQ was developed by Keith J. Edwards (1976). It is designed to measure Personal religious experience. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Very Seldom, 3 = Seldom, 4 = Sometimes, 5 = Frequently, 6 = Almost Always, 7 = Always.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 12 to 84. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total Score (Higher scores indicate a stronger, more positive affective religious experience): 12 – 84
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not reported.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
