Scale Overview
The Religious Attitude Scale – RAS was developed by Pamela K. Poppleton & G. W. Pilkington (1963). It is designed to measure Religious Attitude. The scale is intended for use with University students and general adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Uncertain, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Highly Unfavorable Attitude toward Religion: 1 – 2
- Neutral / Uncertain Attitude toward Religion: 2 – 3
- Highly Favorable Attitude toward Religion: 3 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High split-half and test-retest reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
