Scale Overview
The Religious Attitude Inventory – RAI was developed by David P. Ausubel & Seymour H. Schpoont (1957). It is designed to measure Religious Attitude Intensity. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 50 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: God, Immortality, Church, Religious Doctrine.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Tend to disagree more than agree, 3 = Neither agree nor disagree, 4 = Tend to agree more than disagree, 5 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 25 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 50 to 250. Interpretation guidelines:
- Extremely Nonconformist / Negative Religious Attitude: 50 – 116
- Neutral / Moderate Religious Attitude: 117 – 183
- Extremely Orthodox / Positive Religious Attitude: 184 – 250
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of .97.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
