Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Regulatory Focus Questionnaire – RFQ was developed by E. Tory Higgins, Ronald S. Friedman, Robert E. Harlow, Lorraine Chen Idson, Ozlem N. Ayduk, Amy Taylor (2001). It is designed to measure Regulatory Focus. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Promotion, Prevention.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Promotion | 1,3,7,9,10,11 | 6 |
| Prevention | 2,4,5,6,8 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never or seldom / Never true / Certainly false, 2 = 2, 3 = Sometimes / Sometimes true / 3, 4 = 4, 5 = Very often / Often true / Certainly true.
The scale includes 7 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 5 to 30. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Pride: 5 – 15
- Moderate Pride: 16 – 25
- High Pride: 26 – 30
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
