Scale Overview
The Recovery Self-Assessment – Person in Recovery Version (RSA-R) was developed by Maria O’Connell, Janis Tondora, Rebecca Miller, Kate Kidd, Cheryl Stayner, Guy Hawkins, Larry Davidson (2007). It is designed to measure Recovery-Oriented Service Provision. The scale is intended for use with Adults receiving mental health and/or addiction services.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 32 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Respect and Helping Relationships, Choice, Life Goals Focus, Diversity of Treatment Options, Consumer Involvement.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neutral / Agree Somewhat, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree, N/A = Not Applicable, D/K = Don't Know.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Recovery Orientation: 1 – 2
- Moderate Recovery Orientation: 3 – 3
- High Recovery Orientation: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients range from 0.70 to 0.93 for subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
