Scale Overview
The Rape Empathy Scale – RES was developed by Deitz, S., Blackwell, K. T., Daley, P. C., & Bentley, B. J. (1982). It is designed to measure Empathy toward rape victims and rapists. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a Likert-type response format.
The scale includes 12 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 20 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Empathy toward Rape Victims (High Empathy toward Rapists): 20 – 50
- Moderate Empathy toward Rape Victims: 51 – 90
- High Empathy toward Rape Victims: 91 – 120
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.85.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
