Scale Overview
The Psychological Acculturation Scale – PAS was developed by Tropp, L. R., Erkut, S., Coll, C. G., Alarcon, O., & Vazquez-Garcia, H. A. (1999). It is designed to measure Psychological Acculturation. The scale is intended for use with Hispanic/Latino individuals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Only with Hispanics/Latinos, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = Equally with Hispanics/Latinos and Anglos, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = Only with Anglos (Americans).
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 9. Interpretation guidelines:
- Strong Hispanic/Latino Orientation: 1 – 3
- Bicultural Orientation: 4 – 6
- Strong Anglo/American Orientation: 7 – 9
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
