Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Procedural Fairness Standards in Pay – PFSP was developed by Jones, F. F., Scarpello, V., & Bergmann, T. (1999). It is designed to measure Procedural fairness in pay administration. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Supervisor Support, Accuracy, Process Control, Justification, Bias Suppression.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Supervisor Support | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 | 9 |
| Accuracy | 10,11,12,13,14,15,16 | 7 |
| Process Control | 17,18,19,20,21,22 | 6 |
| Justification | 23,24,25,26 | 4 |
| Bias Suppression | 27,28,29,30 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all accurate, 2 = Slightly accurate, 3 = Moderately accurate, 4 = Quite accurate, 5 = Very accurate.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 30 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Perceived Fairness: 30 – 70
- Moderate Perceived Fairness: 71 – 110
- High Perceived Fairness: 111 – 150
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Supervisor support α = .92, Accuracy α = .96, Justification α = .91, Bias suppression α = .81, Process control α = .92, Combined non-control index α = .95.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
