Scale Overview
The Premarital Sexual Permissiveness Scale – PSPS was developed by Susan Sprecher, Kathleen McKinney, Robert Walsh, & Carrie Anderson (1988). It is designed to measure Premarital sexual permissiveness. The scale is intended for use with Adults and young adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Disagree Strongly, 2 = Disagree Moderately, 3 = Disagree Slightly, 4 = Agree Slightly, 5 = Agree Moderately, 6 = Agree Strongly.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 5 to 30. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Permissiveness: 5 – 12
- Moderate Permissiveness: 13 – 22
- High Permissiveness: 23 – 30
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
