Scale Overview
The Postnatal Risk Questionnaire – PNRQ was developed by Marie-Paule Austin, Stephanie Priest (2005). It is designed to measure Perinatal Psychosocial Risk. The scale is intended for use with Postpartum women.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Childhood Experience, Psychiatric History, Social Support, Life Stressors, Personality Traits, Obstetric and Parenting Experience.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Very much / Not at all, 2 = Minimal / Mild, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Moderate, 5 = Not at all / Very much, 6 = Not applicable.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Risk: 0 – 15
- Moderate Risk: 16 – 23
- High Risk: 24 – 80

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
