Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Personal Growth Initiative Scale – II (PGIS-II) was developed by Christine Robitschek, Ph.D. (2008). It is designed to measure Personal Growth Initiative. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Readiness for Change, Planfulness, Using Resources, Intentional Behavior.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Readiness for Change | 2,8,11,16 | 4 |
| Planfulness | 1,3,5,10,13 | 5 |
| Using Resources | 6,12,14 | 3 |
| Intentional Behavior | 4,7,9,15 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Disagree Strongly, 1 = Disagree Somewhat, 2 = Disagree a Little, 3 = Agree a Little, 4 = Agree Somewhat, 5 = Agree Strongly.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Personal Growth Initiative: 0 – 26
- Moderate Personal Growth Initiative: 27 – 53
- High Personal Growth Initiative: 54 – 80
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Strong internal consistency across subscales and overall score.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
