Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Perception of Study Requirements Instrument – MWS was developed by Bosse & Trautwein (2014). It is designed to measure Perception of study requirements. The scale is intended for use with University students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Academic Mode, Study Expectations & Practical Application, Learning Activity, Pressure to Perform & Failure, Study Organisation, Contact & Cooperation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Mode | 5,14,20 | 3 |
| Study Expectations & Practical Application | 8,12,16 | 3 |
| Learning Activity | 4,9,13,18 | 4 |
| Pressure to Perform & Failure | 3,7,15 | 3 |
| Study Organisation | 2,6,11,19 | 4 |
| Contact & Cooperation | 1,10,17,21 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Very difficult, 2 = Rather difficult, 3 = Partly/Neutral, 4 = Rather easy, 5 = Very easy, N/A = Does not apply to me/my course of study.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 21 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- High perceived difficulty in coping with study requirements: 21 – 52
- Moderate perceived difficulty in coping with study requirements: 53 – 84
- Low perceived difficulty in coping with study requirements: 85 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha = .66 to .82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
