The Perceived Social Self-Efficacy Scale – PSSE was developed by Smith, H. M., & Betz, N. E. (2000). It is designed to measure Social Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults and college students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 25 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = No Confidence, 2 = Little Confidence, 3 = Moderate Confidence, 4 = Much Confidence, 5 = Complete Confidence.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 25 to 125. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Social Self-Efficacy: 25 – 58
- Moderate Social Self-Efficacy: 59 – 91
- High Social Self-Efficacy: 92 – 125
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.90 – 0.94.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
