Scale Overview
The Parental Involvement Scale – Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS) was developed by Stern, S. B., & Smith, C. A. (1995). It is designed to measure Parental Involvement. The scale is intended for use with Parents of adolescents and youth.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Direct Interaction, Organized Activities.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never / Not at all involved, 2 = Seldom / A little involved, 3 = Sometimes / Somewhat involved, 4 = Often / Very involved.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Parental Involvement: 1 – 2
- Moderate Parental Involvement: 2 – 3
- High Parental Involvement: 3 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
