Scale Overview
The Parental Control Scale was developed by City of Houston Health and Human Services Department (1993). It is designed to measure Parental Control and Involvement. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and youth.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Disagree a lot, 2 = Disagree a little, 3 = Agree a little, 4 = Agree a lot.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low parental control/involvement: 1 – 2
- High parental control/involvement: 2 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
