Scale Overview
The Parental Authority Questionnaire – PAQ was developed by John R. Buri (1991). It is designed to measure Parenting Styles. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and adults (retrospective).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 60 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Mother – Permissive, Mother – Authoritarian, Mother – Authoritative, Father – Permissive, Father – Authoritarian, Father – Authoritative.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 10 to 50. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low: 10 – 23
- Moderate: 24 – 36
- High: 37 – 50
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from .74 to .87 for the subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
