The Organizational Communication Conflict Instrument – OCCI was developed by Putnam, L., and Wilson, C. (1982). It is designed to measure Organizational conflict communication strategies. The scale is intended for use with Working adults / organizational employees.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Nonconfrontation, Solution-orientation, Control.

Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Neutral / Undecided, 4 = Disagree, 5 = Strongly Disagree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 30 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- High endorsement of conflict strategies: 30 – 70
- Moderate endorsement of conflict strategies: 71 – 110
- Low endorsement of conflict strategies: 111 – 150
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Nonconfrontation: 0.93, Solution-orientation: 0.88, Control: 0.82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
