Scale Overview
The Organizational Commitment Scale – Affective Commitment Subscale (OC) was developed by Jaros, S. J., Jermier, J. M., Koehler, J. W., & Sincich, T. (1993). It is designed to measure Affective Organizational Commitment. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 1 (Strongly associate with left anchor), 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4 (Neutral), 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7 (Strongly associate with right anchor).
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Affective Commitment: 1 – 3
- Moderate Affective Commitment: 3 – 5
- High Affective Commitment: 5 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.94.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 4 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
