Scale Overview
The Organizational Commitment Questionnaire – OCQ was developed by Lyman W. Porter, Richard M. Steers, Richard T. Mowday, Paul V. Boulian (1976). It is designed to measure Organizational Commitment. The scale is intended for use with Employees and working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 15 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Moderately Disagree, 3 = Slightly Disagree, 4 = Neither Disagree nor Agree, 5 = Slightly Agree, 6 = Moderately Agree, 7 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 15 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Commitment: 15 – 45
- Moderate Commitment: 46 – 75
- High Commitment: 76 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.90 (median alpha).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
