Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale – OCBS was developed by Williams, L. J., & Anderson, S. E. (1991). It is designed to measure Organizational Citizenship Behavior. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Organizational Citizenship Behavior – Individual (OCBI), Organizational Citizenship Behavior – Organization (OCBO), In-Role Behavior (IRB).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Organizational Citizenship Behavior – Individual (OCBI) | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 | 7 |
| Organizational Citizenship Behavior – Organization (OCBO) | 8,9,10,11,12,13,14 | 7 |
| In-Role Behavior (IRB) | 15,16,17,18,19,20,21 | 7 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neither agree nor disagree, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 7 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low engagement in this behavior dimension: 7 – 17
- Moderate engagement in this behavior dimension: 18 – 28
- High engagement in this behavior dimension: 29 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of OCBI alpha: .61-.88; OCBO alpha: .70-.75; IRB alpha: .80-.94.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
