Scale Overview
The Nurses’ Attitudes About HIV/AIDS Scale—Version 2 (NAAS) was developed by Deborah Bray Preston, Elaine Wilson Young, Patricia Barthalow Koch, Esther M. Forti (1997). It is designed to measure Nurses’ attitudes toward HIV/AIDS patients and related professional/social issues. The scale is intended for use with Nurses and healthcare providers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Homosexuality, Women with HIV, IV Drug Abusers, Nursing Care Concerns, Social/Professional Concerns.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 26 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 45 to 225. Interpretation guidelines:
- Less favorable attitudes / lower tolerance toward HIV/AIDS: 45 – 135
- More favorable attitudes / higher tolerance toward HIV/AIDS: 136 – 225

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Homosexuality α = .95, Women α = .64, IV Drug Abusers α = .75, Nursing Care Concerns α = .80, Social/Professional Issues α = .82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
