Scale Overview
The Norms for Aggression and Alternatives (NAA) was developed by Multisite Violence Prevention Project (2004). It is designed to measure Social norms and individual attitudes toward aggression and non-violent alternatives. The scale is intended for use with Middle school students (grades 6-8).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: School Norms for Aggression, School Norms for Alternatives to Aggression, Individual Norms for Aggression, Individual Norms for Alternatives to Aggression.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not like it, 2 = Not care, 3 = Like it.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 3. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Endorsement / Disapproval: 1 – 1
- Neutral / Indifference: 1 – 2
- High Endorsement / Approval: 2 – 3
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
