Scale Overview
The Nonverbal Immediacy Scale-Self Report (NIS-S) was developed by Virginia P. Richmond, James C. McCroskey, & Aaron D. Johnson (2003). It is designed to measure Nonverbal Immediacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Rarely, 3 = Occasionally, 4 = Often, 5 = Very Often.
The scale includes 13 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 26 to 130. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Nonverbal Immediacy: 26 – 77
- Moderate Nonverbal Immediacy: 78 – 103
- High Nonverbal Immediacy: 104 – 130
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High (typically alpha > .85).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
