Scale Overview
The Neighborhood Integration Scale – Rochester Youth Development Study (NI-RYDS) was developed by Thornberry, Krohn, Lizotte, Smith & Tobin (2003). It is designed to measure Neighborhood Integration. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and families.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Social Recognition, Social Interaction and Mutual Aid.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 4 = A lot (Q1-3) / Often (Q4-7), 3 = Some (Q1-3) / Sometimes (Q4-7), 2 = A few (Q1-3) / Seldom (Q4-7), 1 = None (Q1-3) / Never (Q4-7).
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Neighborhood Integration: 1 – 2
- Moderate Neighborhood Integration: 2 – 3
- High Neighborhood Integration: 3 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
