Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Naval Aviator Human Factors Questionnaire – NAHF was developed by O’Connor, Jones, McCauley, & Buttrey (2012). It is designed to measure Crew Resource Management (CRM) Attitudes. The scale is intended for use with Naval aviators and high-reliability team personnel.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 23 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: My stress, Stress of others, Communication, Command responsibility.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| My stress | 2,3,6,10 | 4 |
| Stress of others | 9,11,16 | 3 |
| Communication | 1,4,7,8,12,13,14,15,19 | 9 |
| Command responsibility | 5,17,18,20,21,22,23 | 7 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: A = Disagree Strongly, B = Disagree Slightly, C = Neutral, D = Agree Slightly, E = Agree Strongly.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Relatively low internal consistency typical of attitude questionnaires.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
