Scale Overview
The Naval Aviator Human Factors Questionnaire – NAHF was developed by O’Connor, Jones, McCauley, & Buttrey (2012). It is designed to measure Crew Resource Management (CRM) Attitudes. The scale is intended for use with Naval aviators and high-reliability team members.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 23 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: My Stress, Stress of Others, Communication, Command Responsibility.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Disagree Strongly / Very frequently, 2 = Disagree Slightly / Frequently, 3 = Neutral / Sometimes, 4 = Agree Slightly / Seldom, 5 = Agree Strongly / Very seldom.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 23 to 115. Interpretation guidelines:
- Poor Crew Resource Management Attitudes: 23 – 57
- Moderate Crew Resource Management Attitudes: 58 – 91
- Positive Crew Resource Management Attitudes: 92 – 115
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Relatively low internal consistency (typical for attitude scales).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
