Scale Overview
The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure – 15-item version (Flewelling adaptation) – MEIM-15 was developed by Jean S. Phinney, Flewelling et al. (1993). It is designed to measure Ethnic Identity. The scale is intended for use with High school and college students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 15 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Somewhat disagree, 3 = Somewhat agree, 4 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low ethnic pride and positive outlook: 1 – 2
- Moderate ethnic pride and positive outlook: 2 – 3
- High ethnic pride and positive outlook: 3 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
