Scale Overview
The Monitoring the Future Survey/Education Expectations and Aspirations Scale – MTF-EEAS was developed by Johnston, L. D., O’Malley, P. M., & Bachman, J. G. (2001). It is designed to measure Educational Expectations and Aspirations. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents / High school students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Definitely won’t, 2 = Probably won’t, 3 = Probably will, 4 = Definitely will.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low expectations: 1 – 2
- Moderate expectations: 2 – 3
- High expectations: 3 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
