Scale Overview
The Monitoring the Future Survey/Dependency Scale was developed by Lloyd D. Johnston, Patrick M. O’Malley, & Jerald G. Bachman (2001). It is designed to measure Substance dependency. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 8 = Never used, 1 = No, 2 = Yes.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 6. Interpretation guidelines:
- No reported dependency issues: 0 – 0
- Indicates difficulty quitting or reducing use in one or more substances: 1 – 6
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
