Scale Overview
The Modern Homonegativity Scale – MHS was developed by Melanie A. Morrison, Todd G. Morrison (2002). It is designed to measure Modern Homonegativity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Modern Homonegativity – Gay Men (MHS-G), Modern Homonegativity – Lesbian Women (MHS-L).
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Modern Homonegativity – Gay Men (MHS-G) |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = disagree, 3 = don't know, 4 = agree, 5 = strongly agree.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Homonegativity (per subscale): 12 – 28
- Moderate Homonegativity (per subscale): 29 – 44
- High Homonegativity (per subscale): 45 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified in source text.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
