Scale Overview
The Mobility Inventory for Agoraphobia – MIA was developed by Dianne L. Chambless, G. Craig Caputo, Susan E. Jasin, Edward J. Gracely, & Christine Williams (1985). It is designed to measure Agoraphobic avoidance. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 54 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Avoidance When Accompanied, Avoidance When Alone.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never avoid, 2 = Rarely avoid, 3 = Avoid about half of the time, 4 = Avoid most of the time, 5 = Always avoid.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Minimal Avoidance: 1 – 2
- Mild to Moderate Avoidance: 2 – 3
- Severe Avoidance: 3 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .91 to .97.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
