Scale Overview
The Misanthropy Scale – Revised (MS-R) was developed by Sullivan, P. and Adelson, J. (1954). It is designed to measure Misanthropy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 29 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: -3 = Complete disagreement, -2 = Moderate disagreement, -1 = Slight disagreement, 0 = Neutral / Undecided, 1 = Slight agreement, 2 = Moderate agreement, 3 = Complete agreement.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from -87 to 87. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Misanthropy: -87 – -30
- Moderate Misanthropy: -29 – 29
- High Misanthropy: 30 – 87
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
