Scale Overview
The Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) was developed by Rector TS (1987). It is designed to measure Health-related quality of life in heart failure. The scale is intended for use with Adults with heart failure.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Physical, Emotional.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No (Did not prevent), 1 = Very little, 2 = Little, 3 = Moderate, 4 = Much, 5 = Very much.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Good quality of life / Low impact: 0 – 24
- Moderate impact: 25 – 45
- Poor quality of life / Severe impact: 46 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha > 0.90 for total scale.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
