Measures the degree to which individuals attribute the events and outcomes of their marriage to internal factors (effort, ability) versus external factors (luck, circumstances).
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Miller Marital Locus of Control Scale – MMLOC was developed by Miller, P. C., Lefcourt, H. M., & Ware, W. E. (1983). It is designed to measure Marital Locus of Control. The scale is intended for use with Married individuals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 44 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Effort, Ability, Context, Luck, Internal Locus of Control, External Locus of Control.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Effort | 3,5,7,9,14,18,23,29,31,40 | 10 |
| Ability | 8,11,16,19,20,25,26,33,34,36,38,43 | 12 |
| Context | 1,2,6,10,12,13,17,24,27,28,35,37,39,41,42 | 15 |
| Luck | 4,15,21,22,30,32,44 | 7 |
| Internal Locus of Control | 3,5,7,8,9,11,14,16,18,19,20,23,25,26,29,31,33,34,36,38,40,43 | 22 |
| External Locus of Control | 1,2,4,6,10,12,13,15,17,21,22,24,27,28,30,32,35,37,39,41,42,44 | 22 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: -2 = I disagree very much, -1 = I disagree a little, 0 = Neither agree nor disagree, 1 = I agree a little, 2 = I agree very much.
The scale includes 22 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified in source text.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
