Scale Overview
The Middle School Attitude Inventory – MSAI was developed by R. E. Gillan (1978). It is designed to measure Attitude toward middle school education. The scale is intended for use with Middle school teachers and administrators.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 13 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 30 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- Unfavorable attitude toward the middle school concept: 30 – 70
- Neutral or mixed attitude toward the middle school concept: 71 – 110
- Favorable attitude toward the middle school concept: 111 – 150
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
