Scale Overview
The Middle School Attitude Inventory – MSAI was developed by Gillan, R. E. (1978). It is designed to measure Teachers’ attitudes toward middle school education. The scale is intended for use with Middle school teachers and educators.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 14 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 30 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- Negative Attitude toward Middle School Concept: 30 – 70
- Neutral / Mixed Attitude toward Middle School Concept: 71 – 110
- Positive Attitude toward Middle School Concept: 111 – 150
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
