Scale Overview
The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test – MAST was developed by Melvin L. Selzer (1971). It is designed to measure Alcohol abuse and dependency. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous Yes/No format.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 53. Interpretation guidelines:
- No apparent drinking problem: 0 – 3
- Suggestive of alcohol abuse: 4 – 4
- Indicative of alcoholism: 5 – 53
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
