Scale Overview
The Mentoring Function Scales – MFS was developed by Tepper, K., et al. (1996). It is designed to measure Mentoring functions. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Protégés.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 16 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Psychosocial Mentoring Functions, Career-Related Mentoring Functions.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = To a slight extent, 3 = To some extent, 4 = To a large extent, 5 = To a very large extent.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 16 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Mentoring Support: 16 – 37
- Moderate Mentoring Support: 38 – 59
- High Mentoring Support: 60 – 80
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
