Scale Overview
The Mental Health Recovery Measure – MHRM was developed by Bullock, W. A. & Young, S. L. (2003). It is designed to measure Mental Health Recovery. The scale is intended for use with Adults with psychiatric disabilities.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 8 factors/subscales: Overcoming Stuckness, Self-Empowerment, Learning and Self-Redefinition, Basic Functioning, Overall Well-Being, New Potentials, Spirituality, Advocacy/Enrichment.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Strongly Disagree, 1 = Disagree, 2 = Not Sure, 3 = Agree, 4 = Strongly Agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Recovery: 0 – 40
- Moderate Recovery: 41 – 80
- High Recovery: 81 – 120

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total Alpha: .93, Overcoming Stuckness (.60), Self-Empowerment (.82), Learning and Self-Redefinition (.79), Basic Functioning (.62), Overall Well-Being (.86), New Potentials (.62), Advocacy/Enrichment (.66), Spirituality (.89).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
