Scale Overview
The Mattering to Others Questionnaire – MTOQ was developed by Sheila K. Marshall (1998). It is designed to measure Perceived Mattering. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and young adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not Much / Bottom of the list, 2 = A little / Near the bottom, 3 = Somewhat / Middle of the list, 4 = Quite a bit / Near the top, 5 = A lot / Top of the list.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Perceived Mattering: 12 – 27
- Moderate Perceived Mattering: 28 – 44
- High Perceived Mattering: 45 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from .85 to .92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
