Scale Overview
The Mattering to Others Questionnaire – MTOQ was developed by Sheila K. Marshall (1998). It is designed to measure Perceived Mattering. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and young adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not Much / Bottom, 2 = 2, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = 4, 5 = A lot / Top.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of alpha ranges from .77 to .91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
