The Maslach Burnout Inventory – MBI was developed by Christina Maslach, Susan E. Jackson (1981). It is designed to measure Burnout. The scale is intended for use with Working professionals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, Personal Accomplishment.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Never, 1 = A few times a year, 2 = Once a month, 3 = A few times per month, 4 = Once a week, 5 = A few times per week, 6 = Every day.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 42. Interpretation guidelines:
- Scores are calculated and interpreted separately for each subscale. High scores on Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization, and low scores on Personal Accomplishment, indicate higher burnout.: 0 – 42
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Emotional Exhaustion: .90, Depersonalization: .76, Personal Accomplishment: .76.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
